Cities
Castellamonte (TO)
Castellamonte is the city of ceramics. The first remains that testify to the ancient tradition of local artisans working in clay date back to the Bronze Age. Over time, things have not changed and today, local ceramists produce very valuable objects, such as their famous stoves, and more common objects, such as their characteristic crockery, desired and sought after by fans of terracotta. The town dedicates an annual exhibit to ceramics, which takes place with the Rotonda Antonelliana as a backdrop or, to be more precise, the Parish Church with its original design by the Turin architect Alessandro Antonelli, whose aim it was to design a structure that would cover an area not mush smaller than the area of St. Peter’s in Rome. From that original design, only the outer walls remain, which, due to their circular shape, are known as the “Rotunda Antonelliana”. Interesting for its Baroque architecture is the Church di San Bernardo and the Church di San Rocco, the latter dating back to the second half of the 18th century. Today, following its latest restoration, the façade boasts precious decorations in terracotta.
