Chieri (TO)

This important municipality of the Torino hills today occupies an area that has been inhabited since Prehistoric times, evidenced by the archeological findings of the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. Many of the monuments and buildings document the city’s vivacity in Medieval times and in the eighteenth century. Visitors are surprised to encounter the combination of the Gothic and Baroque styles in the cathedral whose spires soar lightly over the city while inside the worshippers are bathed in the light of the baroque altar. These two eras are also continually interwoven in the civic architecture. Both Palazzo Mercadillo and Palazzo Opessi are Medieval but were extensively adapted during the eighteenth century. The history of Chieri is also strongly marked by occurrences in the contemporary era, such as the opening of the “Martini & Rossi” factory in 1864, which made its vermouth famous worldwide, and the creation of the Museo del Tessile, which bears witness to the old textile industry which largely characterized the town’s economy.
