Fenestrelle (TO)
Perched at an altitude of over 1,100 m on the two banks of the Chisone stream, Fenestrelle is a highly evocative place often wrapped in silence and covered with a blanket of snow. It enchants visitors with its cozy tranquil atmosphere where one can breathe easily. At the same time it offers opportunities to play sports, especially hikes, both easy and more strenuous, or mountain biking. The town’s history includes a few religious events. At the time of the Order of Nantes, Fenestrelle offered peace and shelter to the faithful followers of Pietro Valdo. The Waldensians left the town after the order was overturned. In the fervent religious climate of the Counterreformation Fenestrelle, in contrast to its previous stance, started to open itself to Protestantism, initially with the construction of a Jewish Convent and then with the construction of San Luigi Church, which is still the parish church of today’s borough. The town also expanded its Catholic policies with the building of the Finestrelle Fort, a real gem of military architecture, defined by Edmondo De Amicis as: “Uno dei più straordinari edifizi che possa aver mai immaginato un pittore di paesaggi fantastici” (…). (“One of the most extraordinary buildings that a painter of fantastic scenery could have ever imagined” …)
