Piscina (TO)
For centuries this town was identified with the parish church dedicated to Bishop San Grato. Starting in 1766 it was renovated and expanded according to plans by Gerolamo Buniva. The work, one of the most successful of this Pinerolo architect, presents evident Victorian and Guarinian influences. The dome resembles the Church of San Lorenzo (in Torino) by Guarini, while the vault of the Visitation Chapel was inspired by Vallinotto del Vittone. The façade is distinctive for its recurrent elements of Buniva, like the exposed cornices and the brick pilasters projecting the convex parts, clearly reminiscent of Vittoni. Today, the museum-workshop “Piscina Arte Aperta” distinguishes the borough even more than the Baroque church does. It has transformed the entire area with dozens of artworks impressed on houses, public and private buildings, roads, squares and other urban spaces in the town.
