Sant'Ambrogio di Torino (TO)
The municipality develops at the foot of the San Michele Abbey, one of the greatest architectural complexes of the Romanesque era in Europe. The history of Sant’Ambrogio has always been linked to that of the powerful monastery overlooking it. You come upon the ruins of the castle along the bridle path to the abbey and this demonstrates the important role played by the municipality in the thirteenth century, when it was the administrative centre of the abbey’s power. Located along the ancient road to France, Sant’Ambrogio developed outstanding commerce very early on with numerous inns, workshops and a much-frequented hospital for pilgrims run by the abbey’s monks. The Romanesque bell-tower, built around the year 1000, pays tribute to the existence of another important religious building for the municipality: the ancient parish church of San Giovanni Vincenzo. Completely reconstructed in Baroque style on a plan by architect Bernardo Vittone, today the parish church is one of the most appealing eighteenth-century buildings in the Valle di Susa.
