Varallo (VC)

This is the historical and cultural capital of the Valsesia area. It is mostly known for the Sacro Monte (Sacred Mountain), surrounded by vegetation in the Riserva Naturale Speciale (Special Nature reserve), which overlooks the town. Varallo has many works by the renowned sixteenth-century painter Ferrari and by his pupils. A polyptych by him is housed in the Collegiata di San Gaudenzio (Collegiate Church San Gaudenzio), while other works are kept in the picture gallery mounted in the Palazzo dei Musei (Museums Palace), where are also on show works by Tanzio da Varallo and by local XIX-XX centuries artists. Another masterpiece by Ferrari can be admired inside the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie (St Mary of Grace Church), it is the wall that was frescoed in 1513, where the great artist from Valsesia depicted in 21 panels, the birth, life and death of the Saviour, with an excellent use of colour and forms. The International Contest “Valsesia Musica” (Music in Valsesia) takes place every year in Varallo. It is an important event, which helps to make young international concert artists known to the public. In summer, the most popular event is the fair of the “l’Alpàa” (Alp Festival), it is an interesting showcase for typical craftwork and food products of the area.
