Cities

Ghiffa (VB)

The town is made up of several hamlets, scattered between the Lago Maggiore (Major Lake) and the hills that from Verbania stretch towards Switzerland. Ghiffa in the beginning was an old fishermen village, it has then become well-known for the ‘Cappellificio Panizza’ (Panizza Hat Factory). It was founded in 1881 and was open until 1981, it became world famous as an example of high quality industrial production. The place where generations of master hatters worked has been transformed into the Museo dell´arte del Cappello (The Museum of the art of the Hat) where are housed tools, machinery and documents related to the various phases for processing felt. Ghiffa is very popular among tourists who love nature and tranquillity. The Riserva Naturale Speciale del SS. Monte della Trinità (Special Nature Reserve of the Holy Trinity Mountain) is tourists’ favourite destination, within the reserve is the monumental complex of the Sacro Monte (Sacred Mountain). This place where devout people have been coming for centuries, comprises the Sanctuary, three chapels and the Way of the Cross portico, dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
