San Nazzaro Sesia (NO)
The town of ‘San Nazzaro Sesia’ still retains the original appearance of a farming village, with its typical farmhouses, and extends as far as the area around the Abbazia dei Santi Nazario e Celso (SS Nazario and Celso Abbey). The abbey was founded between 1039 and 1053 by the Bishop of Novara, Riprando, on an ancient building that used to be a Benedictine monastery. The complex is surrounded by high defensive walls, which were erected owing to the conflicts between Novara and Vercelli in the XIII and XIV century. The entrance to the complex is through an opening in the walls, near a XV century tower. San Nazzaro Sesia is one of the towns of the Parco delle Lame del Sesia (Sesia Marshland Park), a nature reserve that is a typical fluvial park where the ‘lame’ (marshland formations typical of the area) emerge and reed beds predominate. As you enter the park, on foot or by bicycle, you can find woodland and undergrowth populated by many squirrels, dormice, polecats as well as an ornithological museum.
