Trino (VC)

Palazzo Paleologo (Paleologo Palace), built in the XIV century, was for a long time the residence of the Paleologo family, who ruled over the Marquisate of the Monferrato between 1305 and 1532. It is thanks to their involvement, that in the fourteen hundreds the noble family Giolito Ferrari from Trino started the local printing tradition. Among the hundreds of printed works, the first copies of the “Comedia” (Comedy) by Dante with the title “divina” (divine), were probably also printed here. Some precious editions printed by the Trino printers are kept in the Museo civico Gian Andrea Irico (Gian Andrea Irico Municipal Museum). The town central nucleus has retained the medieval appearance, while the modern part has expanded along the banks of the Po. The Abbazia di Santa Maria di Lucedio (St Mary of Lucedio Abbey) dates back to 1123, it became an important site for cattle breeding and trade. The municipal area also comprises the Parco naturale del Bosco delle Sorti della Partecipanza (Land-Share Wood and Natural Park): it is all that is left of the ancient postglacial forest that used to cover this area, and that has now been almost destroyed by men. This portion still survives today because it has been under the protection of the ancient institute for the collective administration of the land, which dates back to 1275.
