Mazzè (TO)
Woods and vineyards characterise the hill on top of which the historic centre of the town stands. This is a great scenic point from which to gaze at the Monferrato area, at Superga, at the Canavese area, at the Gran Paradiso and at most of the western Alpine arc. The noble XIX century Palaces and the ruins of the ancient shelter are located next to a monumental complex, which is situated on the top of a hill. The complex is made up of a small XIV century castle and of a large XV century castle with Romantic-Gothic reconstructions of the XIX century. Part of the dungeons date back to the Celtic and Roman rule, and now house the Museo degli Strumenti e Metodi della Santa Inquisizione (Museum of Tools and Methods of the Inquisition). Among the owners of the Castle was the Count Eugenio Brunetta d´Usseaux (1857-1919), who was considered the founder of the Italian Olympic Movement and was the first secretary-general of the IOC, International Olympic Committee from 1908 to 1919.
