Frossasco (TO)

This town, situated in the Val Noce (Noce Valley), not far from Pinerolo is of Roman origin. The square plan of the town is, in fact, indisputable evidence of the ancient existence of a “castrum”. Between the XIII and the XV centuries the hamlet underwent considerable development, which led to the building of a boundary wall with four doors (Torino door, San Donato door, Pinerolo door and San Giusto door), as well as to the building of a tower and elegant Gothic palaces with double lancet windows and frescoes, and the San Donato church, of which there is documentary evidence from 1920. Of the four doors on the XIV century boundary wall, only two are preserved in full, the San Giusto door (on the northern side of the four-sided building) and the Pinerolo door (on the southern side). The Torino door (eastern side) was restored in the 70s and the San Donato door (western side) has been completely rebuilt following acts of vandalism. In addition to its architectural treasures, this town is renowned for being the home of the Museo del Gusto (Taste Museum). The Museum displays an ideal journey through the history of food and nutrition, from prehistory up to the present day, as well as information on main diets, curious taste itineraries to discover bread, pasta, wines…It also houses sections devoted to cuisine in the world of art, advertising, gadgets, art-food, cinema, music and cartoons. In summer, the villagers celebrate the patron saint of the town (St Donato) with the traditional Sagra degli Abbà, together with the parade on horseback of the participants in period costumes through the town streets. Tournaments and games also take place to award the "Leone nero" (Black Lion) banner to the winning contrada (quarter).
