Massazza (BI)
This town is located in the area of the Baraggia plateau, which marks the boundary between the rice-fields of the plain and the foothills of the Alps. Its history is closely connected to that of the Avogadro family, for centuries the lords of the fief of Massazza. The castle was the symbol of their power and of the city, and between the XIV and the XV centuries grew around the imposing square keep of an earlier fortress. It was originally a typical defensive medieval hamlet used to store foodstuffs, agricultural products and as a shelter for the area’s grazing livestock. It is characterised by the tall tower built from broken stones as well as by a viscount stronghold with characteristic swallow-tailed merlons. Inside the castle there is a chapel devoted to St Antonino and St Anne, which has an interesting Romanesque apse and frescoes dating from the thirteen hundreds.
