Galliate (NO)
This ancient town in the province of Novara, which falls within the Parco Naturale della Valle del Ticino (Natural Park of the Ticino Valley), conserves one of the most important monuments of the entire province. This is the Castello sforzesco (the Castle of the Sforza Dynasty) that has retained its essential characteristics intact as well as its grandeur, despite the many historical events and various changes of ownership that it has undergone over the centuries. No less important is the Santuario del Varallino (Varallino Sanctuary), in the district of Vulpiate. The ancient sanctuary, dedicated to the nativity of the Virgin Mary, is built on the place where once stood a small country chapel dedicated to St Peter. The chapel once held a beautiful fresco, dating to the XV century, showing the image of the Virgin Mary in the act of offering a pear to the baby Jesus. The fresco is still visible in the choir of the church.
