San Maurizio d'Opaglio (NO)

San Maurizio d’Opaglio is known as the town of taps and stonecutters, and grew up on the western bank of the Lago d’Orta (Lake Orta). Around 1920 the first taps and fittings factory was established in this town. In the years after the Second World War, the tap industry made San Maurizio d’Opaglio the Italian capital of the field. In 1995, the Museo del Rubinetto was set up, which is evidence of the relationship between man and the exploitation of water. There is another craft that made this town special: stone facing done by the “picasass”, that is the skilled stonecutter who used to work in granite quarries. A footpath has been dedicated to these craftsmen, “la strada degli scalpellini”(stonecutters’ paths). The path leads to the Santuario della Madonna del Sasso (Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Stone), which is one of the most significant places of the Cusio area, in the district of Boleto, and that was built between 1730 and 1748.
