Bardonecchia (TO)
Bardonecchia’s coat of arms bears the impressive motto “Seigneur de soi même”, Lord of itself. This small town in the upper Susa valley, 1,312 metres a.s.l., is historically Piedmont’s skiing capital. It lies in the middle of a sunny hollow and is the starting point for the ski slopes of four distinct areas: Campo Smith-Colomion, Melezet, Jafferau, Les Arnauds all of which total 140 km of downhill and 20 km of cross-country pistes. Bardonecchia has also hosted one of the three Olympic villages of Torino 2006. This village has been created by renovating the old Medail holiday camp complex; the original building was completed in 1939 and is considered one of the most important works of the architect Gino Levi Montalcini, as well as a masterpiece of rationalist architecture.
