San Giorgio Monferrato (AL)
The history of San Giorgio Monferrato is closely linked to that of its castle, considered by many academics as the oldest of Monferrato. The first written records of its existence, in fact, date back to 999 and are connected to the name of the then Bishop of Vercelli Leone. The castle has always been considered as a point of reference for the people and for town life. In 1530 the castle was even seat of the tribunal of the inquisition, which had been charged with the identification of the plague-spreaders, who had been responsible for spreading the plague.
