Monastero Bormida (AT)

This town extends over the left bank of the river Bormida, and its history has for centuries been connected to the events of the Benedictine Monastery, which was founded in the IX century as a shelter for the people of the surrounding lands, hence the town’s name. The old town is dominated by the Castle, which was built specifically for use by the Benedictine monks. This is the reason why it was, unusually, positioned downhill, while the town extends over the slopes of the hill. The square Tower dating back to the XI century is linked to the building through an arch. It has friezes with hanging small arches, and it underwent important changes over the centuries, beginning from the fourteen hundreds. The Sagra del Polentone (Polenta Fair) has taken place in the medieval square opposite the castle since 1573.
