San Giorgio Canavese (TO)
San Giorgio Canavese lies on the hills that enclose the glacial amphitheatre of Ivrea to the south, and is situated on the large plain created by the river Orco. The town is dominated by the imposing castle of the Counts of Biandrate, which is made up of two structures: a smaller and more ancient building (XII –XIV century), and a larger building that underwent radical structural alterations in the seventeen hundreds. The castle originally had a defensive function and was later converted into a magnificent residence. At the end of the seventeen hundreds began a period during which many great personalities emerged from San Giogio Canavese, which is probably the feature that most distinguishes this small town in the Canavese region. Some of the renowned personalities who were born here are: historian and politician Carlo Botta, lyric opera singer Teresa Belloc (Rossini’s favourite), inventor Antonio Michela (creator of the sound-stenograph), scientist Carlo Ignazio Giulio, engraver Michele Pechenino, naval engineer Carlo Vigna (co-designer of the first Italian submarine "Delfino"-Dolphin), Greek scholar Monsignor Marco Pechenino and many more who contributed to San Giorgio’s nickname: "Athens of the Canavese."
