Sauze d'Oulx (TO)

Piero Gros, winner of the 1974 World Cup and a 1976 Olympic Gold Medal for downhill skiing, not to mention a clutch of Italian national championships, was responsible for bringing the mountains of Piedmont onto the world stage. In particular, he drew attention to the mountains where he lived and trained, Sauze d’Oulx in the upper Susa Valley. In Sauze d’Oulx, where the Swiss Adolfo Kind founded the “Ski Club Torino” in 1919 and where the first ski-lift facilities were built, the Olympic Freestyle competitions were held. Sauze is known as the “balcony on the Alps” because of its panoramic views of surrounding mountains, and its most distinctive building is the multi-story circular tower, once a summer holiday centre for Fiat employees. A favourite winter destination for skiers from all over Europe, Sauze is particularly popular with the British, and has a small community of ex-pat residents.
