Caraglio (CN)
The fame of this small, peaceful village, located only a few kilometres from Cuneo at the beginning of the Grana Valley grew thanks to the raising of silk worms and silk production. Today, this business itself may be gone, but the memory of silk-making is still present thanks to the restoration of the “Filatoio Rosso”, the oldest silk works in the world. The building changed very little over the years and its particular architectural design makes it a unique example of seventeenth century Piedmont industry. Built in just two years (1676-1678) by Giò Gerolamo Galleani, a well-known silk producer, it was organized in regular, symmetrical shapes around two internal courtyards. Of particular interest are the round towers at the corners of the building and the rich decorations in red clay and stucco. The Filatoio was closed down just before the beginning of the Second World War and was not touched again until a few years ago when restoration work began in order to transform it into a Silk Museum and a Centre for modern art exhibitions.
