Stresa (VB)
Many places in Piedmont find themselves surrounded by a magical atmosphere, but Stresa has much more than that. A breathtaking view meets the first-time visitor to Stresa: Lake Maggiore, lined by rows of palm trees, flowering gardens, and the facades of elegant hotels, and in front the picturesque Borromeo Islands, which seem to rise mysteriously out of the lake waters. All of this may be the reason why the first English tourists became fascinated by this area in the early nineteenth century. Later it became one of the favourite destinations of foreign tourists. Art and nature have found an extraordinary symbiosis here. An example is the nineteenth century Villa Pallavicino, which has been converted into an original zoo. Built in late neo-classic style, it is situated in the middle of a large park full of hundred-year-old trees. Stresa is the starting point for tours of the archipelago of the Borromeo Islands (Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori). Or you can take the cable-car to go up to the Mottarone ski slopes, where you will find yourself on one of the most beautiful natural balconies in Piedmont.
