Cities
Tortona (AL)
Tortona has always been at the centre of one of the most important lines of communication in Northern Italy. Its name comes from that of the ancient Ligurian city “Derhona”, (the term “Derton” meant castle) that was refounded by the Romans in 148 b.c. when they built the Postumia road to connect Piacenza and Genoa. Tortona was also one of the first cities in Italy to become a free Comune and a rich commercial centre. The city’s panorama is dominated by the imposing golden statue of the Madonna with child placed atop the bell tower of the Sanctury of the Madonna della Guardia, built in 1931 upon the request of Don Orione. In 1893 he founded the first boys’ school in Tortona, which later became the Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza. A visit to Torona would not be complete without a tour of its surrounding hills where Fausto Coppi, born in Castellania, trained to become one of Italy’s greatest champion cyclists. Other areas to explore are the beautiful natural areas around the Val Curone, Valle Grue and Valle Ossona where you can discover their typical products such as cherries, strawberries, peaches as well as a variety of vineyards which produce mainly Cortese, Dolcetto and Barbera wine.
