Carrù (CN)

The town of Carru is located fifteen kilometres from Mondovi’ on the left bank of the Tanaro River at the western end of the Po Valley near the Langhe hills. Its ancient origins can be seen in the historic centre, set out in a circular plan, where you can admire ancient nobles’ palaces and eighteenth century churches. Not to be missed are the church of the Assunzione di Maria Vergine, built following the design of the architect, Francesco Gall, and the Castle, which is known to have existed as far back as 1401. Its present-day appearance, however, is the result of a large number of modifications carried out over its 6 centuries of life. The name, Carrù, is also associated with an event that is very popular with both tourists and people who work in the meat sector. In fact, it is the Fiera del Bue Grasso, first held in 1910, which takes place every year on the Thursday before Christmas. Only Piedmontese beef can be entered in the contest that is judged by veterinarians and beef breeders. At 11am the winners are announced in the Foro Boario in the Market Square and the best animals are awarded the much-coveted , hand-decorated caparisons and ribbons. Following the ceremony you can watch all the animals parade through the Square. From early in the morning you can taste typical local products such as boiled beef with its varied sauces and tripe soup in the local restaurants.
