Cities
Novi Ligure (AL)
The “University of Cycling” – that’s what sports newspapers used to call Novi Ligure, a small town on the Piedmont- Liguria border, set among rolling hills covered with the vines that grow the famous Cortese grapes. This was because there was a time when this town, and the hills around it, had become the “capital” of the national sport of cycling, as the home town of two of the greatest champions Italy had ever seen - Costante Girardengo and Fausto Coppi. In the city a museum recalls the days of the “city of the giants”, but nowadays the image of Novi is associated principally with food, particularly with chocolate and sweets. Apart from producing prestigious wines and the DOCG spumante “Gavi”, Novi today attracts visitors eager to sample its chocolate, “torrone” nougat, canastrelli biscuits and white truffles. The old city centre is dominated by the ruins of the medieval Castle and its tower (dating back to the 14th century). Near the castle you can still see what little remains of the old boundary walls of the medieval city, which were demolished only at the end of the 19th century. Stroll through the narrow streets of the old city and admire the elegant mansions built by the noble families of Novi during the time when the town was ruled by Genoa. The Palazzo Negroni and the Palazzo della Dogana are two of the most splendid examples. The Baroque period has left its mark on the architecture of many of the city’s churches: for example, Santa Maria Maggiore and Sant’ Andrea, San Pietro and Santa Maria Maddalena.
