Cities
Ivrea (TO)
If you want to see several important examples of modern architecture, just go to Ivrea.
Ivrea is a city in the Canavese area of Piedmont in the centre of a vast moraine amphi-theatre surrounded by the outline of the “Serra di Ivrea”, the highest wall of hills in Europe.
Ivrea, which was called Eporedia by the Romans, is a city that is well-known on an
international level thanks to the Olivetti company. Olivetti was headquartered in Ivrea and many of its factories were located there. It was at the core of the local economy as well as being an important component of the national economy. Although the industrial triumph of Olivetti no longer exists, the historical heritage has not been lost. In fact, it has gained in importance thanks to the foundation of the Museum of Modern Architecture. The MAM extends for about two kilometers in the open air and along its path one can find the most representative buildings of the Olivetti era. Moreover Ivrea is a city that is rich in historical and artistic buildings such as the Cathedral, the Castle surrounded by four large, imposing, circular towers, San Bernardino church, and the Roman amphitheatre.
Ivrea is also the only city in the world to hold a Carnival with a precise theme whose protagonists are not just in costume but represent idealized characters that symbolize libertarian values and act out historical events. It is worth noting that the appeal of this Carnival, and its high point, is the “battle of the oranges”. This mock battle appeals to much of the citizenry, who can take part in it by signing up with one of the many teams that have been organized. Along with the home-grown Eporediesi, many outsiders join in the battle thus becoming honourary Eporediesi for the Carnival period. This fact testifies to the vitality of this unique tradition.
