Piemonte, which has always been hallmarked by its outstanding achievements in the design field, now becomes the key player in a project based on innovation and creative flair, in which design represents a valid instrument of local economic, social and cultural development. This is why Torino has been chosen as the “beta tester” of the “World Design Capital” programme. For Piemonte, 2008 will be the year it was transformed from a place of production serving the national community into a place of planning serving the international community. No longer merely the Fiat headquarters, the homeland of Juventus football team or the shrine of the Holy Shroud, it now emerges as a region with an international vocation, characterised by a lively cultural fabric. The Torino World Design Capital calendar addresses four separate publics and is organised into four sections, each of which envisages a “main event” and a “main exhibition”. The aim of the event’s starting point, “Public Design” is to transmit the concept of design as a means of improving the quality of life, through the Capodanno del Design (New Year’s Eve of Design) and the prestigious XXI Premio Compasso d’Oro (21st Golden Compass Award). “Economy & Design” features an exchange between the world of business and that of design. This section will feature the international competition “Geodesign” and the exhibition titled “Olivetti. L’Azienda Creativa” (Olivetti. The Creative Company). The “Education & Design” section will explore the various training pathways for designers. The “Summer School” event and the “Flexibility” exhibition will demonstrate the current propensity to a multidisciplinary approach to design. Last but not least, “Design Policies” will explore the scope for design to provide an ideal tool for local economic and social development, presenting the “Case internazionali del Design” (International Houses of Design) and the exhibition “Auto. Sogno e realtà”(Cars. Dreams and Reality), which promotes creativity – focusing in particular on the Torino area – in the car design sector.
