A year around the Alps
itinerante
from 13.01.2008 to 12.10.2008
To celebrate 80 years of Club Alpino Italiano of Chieri, a very ambitious project will be implemented, i.e. a ring tour of 1,200 kilometres around the Alps, to be carried out in one year (the last leg will be on 12th October 2008). Sponsored by Comune di Chieri, Provincia di Torino and Regione Piemonte, the project includes 51 stages which, with a drop of over 59,000 metres uphill, will touch summits like that of Gran Paradiso, Mont Blanc, Cervino and Monte Rosa. Geographically the tour involves three nations (Italy, France and Swiss), 4 cross-border regions (Piemonte, Valle d’Aosta, Rhône Alpes, Valais), 7 provinces, departments or cantons (Torino, Aosta, Vercelli, Biella, Hautes Alpes, Haute Savoie, Valais) and 85 municipalities. Every mountain sport will be included, from mountain climbing to snowshoes, from cross-country skiing to mountain bike, and everybody is called to give a contribution to the project, taking part in one or more stages. The event is accompanied by several cultural events, like Cai library opening and the staging of a picture exhibition on this enterprise.
