PiemonteFeel for the weekend
different location
from 03.09.2008 to 07.09.2008
Opportunities are not lacking during this first weekend of September to discover the Piemonte region. Design could be a leitmotif along with the many initiatives making up the agenda of Torino 2008 World Design Capital. In the region’s capital at the Alpine foothills, the “Flexibility-design in a fast-changing society” exhibit should be pointed out. This exhibit, set up at the “Ex-Carceri, Le Nuove” (former prison,) unwinds along the corridors of prison cells revealing a 3-stage path, articulated by the results of musical research by three sound designers.
To give some careful consideration to the physical, social and economic changes that have taken place since the 1880’s until now and to better understand the urban changes that are underway, such as the planning and scenarios that will involve Torino in the future, the “Torino 011-Biografia di una città”, (Torino 011- Biography of a city) exhibit is a good choice. The exposition is arranged within the area known as one of the most important of Torino’s industry: the splendid aisles of the “ad H” building of the Officine Grandi Riparazioni delle Strade Ferrate (Railroad Restoration Garages) where corso Castelfidardo and via Borsellino meet. Thanks also to the approaching “Flexibility” exhibit, this section of town, which has already positioned itself at the heart of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy in 2011, is beginning to define its self-appointed vocation as the illustrative magnet for art and culture.
For those who wish to travel through authentic living environments and get to know the most recent trends and products from the world of design, a stop at the “Casa Decor-Interni d'Autore” (Home- Interior Décor) exhibit is advised being held at the Palazzo Marchesi di Saluzzo di Cardè overlooking the Piazza san Carlo in the centre of town. Another interesting exposition is “Piemonte Torino Design”, at the palazzo della Regione (Piazza Castello); since it documents the excellence of design “made in Piemonte” by displaying over 200 industrial products designed and/or created within the Piemonte territory by the more than 150 designers and 170 companies involved (some of which are: Adriano Design, Alessi, Aurora, Bialetti, Ferrino, Giugiaro Design, Pininfarina Extra, Sabelt, Sambonet, Seven, Sparco, Venchi).
The events of the Torino 2008 World Design Capital are also taking place throughout the region: at the Filatoio di Caraglio (Spinning mill at Caraglio), in the province of Cuneo, the “Pop design” exhibit is open until September 14th, displaying the demystifying and irreverent designs of the 1960’s until today. The unusual exhibit “Dimensions of Design 100 Classical Seats” retraces the history of the chair, a commonly used object that has always captured the attention of designers, architects and artists is open until Sunday, September 7th at the San Sebastiano Cloisters in Biella. There are 100 models/prototypes on a 1:6 scale on display with a suggestive setting.
