Ready, Set, Go! The long marathon leading to the new year has begun: a joyous relay of initiatives and events in every province of the region. The celebration of the winter solstice officially opens the Christmas holidays. A special occasion to enjoy the longest night of the year is offered by the Osservatorio Astronomico (Astronomic Observatory) in Pino Torinese (To). On Sunday the 21st there will be games and activities for the very young alternated with the projection of “Storie d’inverno” (Winter Stories) at the Plenatarium: this original show relives the myths related to the constellations that have illuminated our winter nights since the beginning of time. For very small children, the perfect place to await Christmas could be the Casa del Teatro Ragazzi e Giovani di Torino, which will be proposing Stilema/Unoteatro’s new show "Ai bambini con le orecchie" (For children with ears) – by and with Silvano Antonelli – and the mise en scene of the free adaptation of “Polar Express”: "A Christmas Tale" (sung live.) From December 19 -21. Another present for the children and chaperones is the arrival of the acclaimed show Winx On Ice at Torino’s Palavela with the exceptional casting of Carolina Kostner in the lead role as well as the participation of thirty expert skaters (from December 26 – 28). Without forgetting about the many events organised in numerous townships throughout the Piemonte region with letters, Santas, bonfires, torchlight processions and lots of presents for everyone. As the tradition dictates, the Christmas holidays are animated by a driving swarm of concerts. In Biella, the weekend can be spent among ween performances by bands and choirs, culminating in live jazz with Max Tempia and Friends, featuring special guest Massimo Serra (December 20, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. in the evocative backdrop of the piazza Cisterna). In Novara, the Christmas concert is entrusted to the bizarre Funk Off, the real stars of the Notte Bianca di Natale (White Night of Christmas) scheduled for Saturday the 20th. In Torino, between Christmas and New Years, the Auditorium Rai Arturo Toscanini is proposing four evenings dedicated to great music with the Alabama Gospel Choir, interpreter of “Oh happy day!” (December 20, 2008 at 9:00 p.m.), the 100 artists of the Armata Russa di San Pietroburgo (St. Petersburg Red Army Choir. January 4, 2009 at 8:30 p.m.), the Gran Galà di Capodanno (Great New Year’s Gala) starring the Johann Strauss Festival Orchestra (January 6, 2009 at 8:30 p.m.) and the awaited “Concerto de Aranjuez”, with Roland Saad and the Kiev Radio and Television Symphonic Orchestra (January 8, 2009 at 8:30 p.m.). On stage at the Maison Musique di Rivoli (To), the Terri McConnell Gospel Choir is awaited on Saturday December 20th and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Rivoli (Rivoli Symphony Orchestra), star of the “Concerto delle Feste” (Holiday Concert) on Sunday the 28th. In Savigliano, (province of Cuneo), even the fountains will be playing for Christmas! The credit is due to the return of the Naldy’s Fontane Luminose in concerto (Sparkling Fountains in concert), a particularly evocative event because of the colours, lights and shadows that come into play emphasising the magic of the Christmas atmosphere (December 21, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. in Piazza Santarosa). The Museo Civico di Savigliano (Savigliano Civic Museum) will also be hosting the Un mondo di auguri (A world of best wishes), until January 6, 2009, an unusual exhibit of greeting cards from “another era”. For those who wish to wait for Christmas in front of the silver screen, we advise the projections at the Christmas Film Festival. For those who prefer comfortable seats at the theatre instead, an interesting offer arrives from Olympic township Pragelato which will be hosting “Il Grande Fresco” (The Big Coldness) a show by and with Guido Catalano and Federico Sirianni at Casa Pragelato.
