The Siege of Canelli

Canelli

Historical Center

from 21.06.2008 to 22.06.2008

The death in 1612 of Francesco Gonzaga, Duke of Mantova with rights over Monferrato, set off numerous succession protests, and Canelli, located on the border between Savoy and Monferrato, became the theater of the conflict. Here, soldiers, thanks to the help of the local population, were able to defeat the enemies and the people from Canelli were, as a reward from the Duke of Mantova for the courage they demonstrated, exempt from paying taxes for thirty years. Since then, the memory of the Assedio di Canelli (the Seige of Canelli) has been relived by the locals every year as a true and proper town celebration where music, theater, history, costumes, art, craftsmanship, wine, and food come together. The people of Canelli recreate the struggle of the besieged city, bringing it to life for visitors through the emotional state of officials, soldiers, and farmers as well. In fact, admission to the historical center and to the many events in the town square is free, but you can enter only with a pass – a Tiletto – if you want to avoid the pillory and so, from the very beginning, you can breathe in the atmosphere created in Canelli. Besides this, in the taverns and the bistros you can enjoy the “cena dell’assediato” (“dinner of the besieged”) and celebrate the “pranzo della vittoria” (“victory lunch”) with a typical 17th century menu.
