They left Italy packed shut in heavy trunks in June of 1946, following Maria José first into her exile into Portugal, the one chosen by the royal family after the proclamation of the Republic, and then into Switzerland. The 10 royal capes and the 20 court ballroom gowns testify therefore, for the first time to the public the role occupied by the Principessa di Piemonte, as she was called at the time, the etiquette and taste in vogue in Italy’s last royal court. Among the gowns and capes put at the disposal of the public by the Fondazione Umberto II and Maria José, there are also 4 gowns designed for her wedding with the crown prince. A trousseau that, by ancient tradition, was used to celebrate the admittance to court of the foreign princess and to confirm her new nationality.
