Antique bazaars

“That’s much better than Portobello Road!... Or the Paris Flea Market.” This is what Sheila, a blonde-haired woman, called out to Bonetto, an Italian man eight inches shorter than her who happened to be an expert in American studies.

This line was enough to give an exact image of one of Turin’s city institutions, the Balon antique bazaar. Sheila and Bonetto are characters in the most famous of Fruttero and Lucentini’s novels, La donna della domenica, which was adapted into a film by Luigi Comencini. Marcello Mastroianni plays the role of police commissioner Santamaria and Jacqueline Bisset that of “the Sunday woman,” a seductive upper-class woman from Turin. It is a comic, refined, and irreverent mystery story set in Turin that paints a merciless picture of it. By the late 1800s Piedmont’s junk dealers got together every Saturday behind Porta Palazzo. In the 1950s they were joined by the newly arrived southern Italian immigrants. Now people from all continents have joined the earlier groups and the Balon has become a real melting pot with Piedmont sauce. The bazaars outside of Turin are less lively but more specialized, including those in Cherasco, Alessandria, Vercelli (called L’Barlafus), Casale and Nizza Monferrato. Almost all of these are dedicated to antiques and the sale of furniture and knickknacks from the farm houses of Piedmont. Collectors looking for weird things should go to Santhià, the so-called “temple” of strange collecting, the only place where someone can find complete sets of Smurfs displayed or surprise toys from the insides of chocolate eggs.

Filatoio Rosso di Caraglio

The Filatoio (Spinning Mill), built between 1676 and 1678, is an extraordinary example of 17th century Piemonte “industrial architecture”. Today, completely restored, it houses the Museo Regionale della Seta (Regional Silk Museum), as well as contemporary art shows.

Castello di Mazzè

In the ancient underground parts of the medieval castle is the Museo della Tortura (Museum of Torture): tools and methods from the Holy Inquisition. The building is surrounded by a large park with a scenic view looking out over the Canavese.

Forte di Vinadio

Requested by Re Carlo Alberto, the Forte (Fort) di Vinadio represents one of the most important examples of military architecture from the Alps. It extends length-wise for 1,200 meters, on three levels, which cover about 10 km of interior passageway.

Riccardo Scamarcio

"I confess. I have committed the sin of gluttony in Piemonte. Dishes made with Alba truffles are irresistible and are a “must” during my stays in Piemonte."

Carlo Mazzacurati

“Torino is a special place for me, I must say it’s almost exotic. I always enjoy coming to town. I worked in Torino in 2001 while filming A cavallo della tigre. We would shoot at the le Nuove prison and while we were on the set we heard about 9-11 Attack on the Twin Towers”.

Adrien Brody

“While shooting Dario Argento’s Giallo, I bought a used bicycle at Balon and would go out for a ride along the Po….Gorgeous…Not to mention Piemonte’s cuisine which is smashing….”
