Science and technology parks

Within the past planning of the structural funds [1994-1999 and 2000-2006]), the Regione Piemonte promoted the creation a series of high quality centres for the technological businesses settlement. Even if they are created by diverse projects and over uneven time periods, the science and technology parks (S&TPs) in Piemonte have in common high quality infrastructures and an elevated presence and are held by many actors, such as the public administration, Finpiemonte, the universities, and private businesses. Nevertheless, within the last years these structures have shown concerning difficulties: insufficient corporation stocks, elevated debts, polarization on real estate investments, unfocused portfolio activities, and so on. To remedy this situation, Finpiemonte, in agreement with the Regional Committee has set up the elements for a true and proper S&TP launching plan within the framework of more general regional technology transfer reorganization, as indicated in Regional Law 4/2006.

There are six Science and Technology Parks in Piemonte:

Bioindustry Park

Bioindustry Park (Colleretto Giacosa; Ivrea)
The activities of this S&TP have been focused since the beginning on promoting life sciences and biotechnology.

Environment Park

Environment Park (Torino)
The park was created as a centre to formulate and diffuse “green” technology and the principles of ecological sustainability. More recently, within the park, significant skills in the field of hydrogen and plasma technology have also been developed, contributing to the recognition of the Torino system as a high quality magnet within this area.

Tecnoparco del Lago Maggiore

Tecnoparco del Lago Maggiore (Verbania)
This is the first of seven parks created in Piemonte with financing from the structural Funds, not to mention, the first in northern Italy. Even if it originally had the qualities of a generalized park, following the indications expressed by regional programming, it has been progressively directing itself toward the development of projects in the field of materials and alternative energy sources.

PST

PST delle telecomunicazioni della Valle Scrivia (Tortona) The park had initially mapped out it own specialization in telecommunications. In any case, the need to guarantee some earnings for the company that manages the park led to accepting rather disparate activities within the park. For the future, the progressive redirection of the PST toward the application of ICT technologies is foreseen in the sectors of packaging and logistics.

Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality and Multi Media Park (Torino)
It is the Piemonte park dedicated to the diffusion and development of virtual reality and multimedia technologies.

Tecnogranda

Tecnogranda (Dronero, Cn) It is the newest of the Piemonte S&TP and was created as a generalized park to boost innovation in the PMI’s in the province of Cuneo. Recently, the company that manages the Park presented an industrial plan in which development policies and company strategies are spelled out. From the plan, the desire emerges to direct the park toward sustaining PMI activities in the agro industrial sector and to transform agricultural and animal products. In particular: ICT applied to traceability systems in the agro industry.

Places

Villa Scott

The little manor house, one of the most important examples of Torino Liberty architecture, is linked to the name of Dario Argento who set his film, “Profondo Rosso” (“Deep Red”) here – perhaps his most emotional film and the one with the strongest visual effects.

Filatoio Rosso di Caraglio

The Filatoio (Spinning Mill), built between 1676 and 1678, is an extraordinary example of 17th century Piemonte “industrial architecture”. Today, completely restored, it houses the Museo Regionale della Seta (Regional Silk Museum), as well as contemporary art shows.

Sacro Monte di Crea

Built at the end of the 1500’s, the Sacro Monte di Crea has 23 chapels and 5 hermitages scattered throughout the woods and connected to each other by paths. The chapels narrate the life of the Virgin Mary and house extraordinary life-size statuary groups.

People

Personaggio

Joanne Harris

"The Langhe countryside is breathtakingly beautiful - it’s enough on its own, but what has truly struck me is the sense of community and the respect and love that grape-growers have for the land and for the wine they create."

Carolina Kostner

"The people of Piemonte are rather similar to the people of Alto Adige. That’s probably because the mountains are two steps away…but, in Torino, which is a big city, there isn’t the same atmosphere as there is in my part of the country. Here, there’s everything. Discovering its most interesting sides will be a true pleasure…"

Piero Chiambretti

"The free time I have, I spend in Torino. It’s the place where I grew as a human and professionally. My years of study and cabaret, those of fleeing and returning a winner, those of my haunts. Torino is my life."
