Theatres
Teatro Alfieri
Category: Theatres
This theatre overlooks one of the most beautiful squares in Torino, Piazza Solferino, a corner of the city embellished by period buildings and the Angelica fountain. The Teatro Alfieri was built in 1855 to a design by Barnaba Panizza and opened in 1855. Its history is full of events, some of which unfortunate, including two fires and a bombing during World War Two. Thanks to the architectural beauty of the nineteenth century façade culminating in a triangular pediment, its charm has remained unchanged by time. Initially built to house opera, prose and horse shows, its’ stage has been graced over the years by important Italian and foreign artistes. Its’ renovation in 2001-02 has restored it to its original splendour, offering seating in the stalls for 1000 and in the gallery for 500 and the creation of two cinemas.
