Sestriere, situated at an altitude of 2035 on the homonymous hill overlooking the Chisone Valley and the Susa Valley, was the first modern Italia ski resort. Opened in 1937 by the Agnelli family, Sestriere now places every entertainment opportunity at the disposal of snow lovers. The main centre of the Via Lattea district (over 200 different ski runs served by 78 lift systems, 400 km of ski runs with an artificial snow network covering over 60% of the skiing surface), it offers the opportunity to link up with a further sic resorts in the district and to ski by night in the light of the reflectors on the Giovanni Alberto Agnelli ski run. From the easiest ski runs to the harder off-piste slopes, from ski touring to cross-country skiing, here everyone finds the ideal ground for testing their personal skills, safely descending the tracks which hoisted the downhill skiing competitions of the Torino 2006 XX Olympic Winter Games.
To experience the greatest thrills, we recommend the Kandahar slalom Giovanni Alberto Agnelli ski run (used for great sporting events and positioned centrally with the arrival point in the town centre, served by the Cit Roc chair-lift, from the arrival area it is possible to see the whole competition track), the Sises ski run, named since 2004 after Gianni Agnelli (this is the run used for the “giant” in the 2006 Olympics; the start is situated on the slopes of Monte Sises and the track is very difficult and technical; the ski run is served by the Cit Roc chair-lift and the Sises ski-lift), the Kandahar Banchetta – Giovanni Nasi ski run (the start is at an altitude of 2,800 metres, the highest point of the Via Lattea, from which it is possible to enjoy a fabulous view of the surrounding mountains); the ski run travels along the slopes of Monte Motta before descending to Monte Banchetta and ending in Sestriere Borgata. It is a course recommended only for expert skiers. In the initial stretch, on the wall, a maximum gradient of 58.5% is reached. And for those who like having fun on natural humps, channels and difficult stretches, there’s nothing better than ski run 32 Motta and 5 Sises. These are joined by an ice rink, just one of many features that make Sestriere the undisputed queen of Piemonte’s mountains.
