Skiing in Oropa makes it possible to combine sport and the discovery of the artistic and architectonic beauty of the Sacro Monte (Sacred Mountain), included by the Unesco among its World Heritage sites, as well the discovery of natural beauty, in an environment which has been preserved for centuries against urban contamination and has a rich heritage of biodiversity.
To reach the 1900 m altitude of Lake Mucrone and the Busancano downhill ski run, it is indispensable to use the cableway that leaves from the large clearing behind the New Basilica of Oropa. The lift system is the direct descendant of the first cableway built in Italy and is the access gate to the mountains of the splendid basin that surrounds the Sacro Monte, an authentic winter paradise for ski tourism. The Rosazza Refuge and the Hotel Savoia, situated at the arrival point, are the ideal place to set off on ski touring excursions to Monte Mucrone and Monte Rosso. At the same altitude it is also possible to take the telecabin for Monte Camino, offering access to the Serralunga ski run at 2390 m. Among the meadows and woods of Monte d’Oropa which surround the New Church, in the winter the Pietro Micca society runs a cross-country skiing circuit measuring about 5 km.
