Cycling - Bike trekking - The Savoy Residences south of Torino (To)
Category: Cycling
The residences of the Savoy family, a part of UNESCO “Heritage of Mankind” since 1997, constitute a complex of remarkable historical, artistic and environmental value. The bike route starting from and ending in Parco delle Vallere (Vallere Park, at the entrance of Piemonte’s chief town) runs along roads which saw the passage of earls, warrior kings, beatings, animated by the remembrance of ballets, art collections and notable residences. Two itineraries of more than 54 km each, complete a ring including the Castello di Moncalieri (Moncalieri Castle), as well as the Castello Reale di Racconigi (Racconigi Royal Castle) and the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi (the Hunting Lodge of Stupinigi). The route goes on along the provincial bike track, going past the Po river in correspondence to Corso Savona after 1,2 km. The alternation of dirt and asphalt roads continues until the Moncalieri-Villastellone Regional Road 393, which you’ll leave at about 12 km from the departure point, following the directions to Carignano. The itinerary now unfolds among paths leading to the forks for the Abbazia di Casanova (the Abbey of Casanova) and for Carmagnola. Once past the 40th km on the provincial road a descent begins, at the end of which you will ride across Caramagna and Provincial Road 165. When you arrive in Cascina Merlino, you’re just 2 km away from the walls of the Castello di Racconigi. The journey back goes on along the Casalgrasso-Polonghera road and on Provincial Road 279, on different kinds of ground. When you reach the town, follow the directions to Castagnole Piemonte and Candiolo to reach the Parco di Stupinigi, which is at about 28 km away. At this point, there are only 8,6 km left on bike track to end the itinerary.
