“Un uomo solo al comando, la sua maglia è bianco-celeste, il suo nome è Fausto Coppi.” (There is just one man in the lead, his shirt is white and light-blue, his name is Fausto Coppi.) This is what the sports reporter Mario Ferretti said during the Cuneo-Pinerolo race, at the last stage of the 1949 Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy). He was the great rival of Gino Bartali in the first years of the post war period. Now the Campionissimo (Champion of champions) has his own museum in Castellania, a few kilometres from Tortona, where he was born in 1919. During the forties and fifties, Coppi became a legendary sports figure for all generations in Italy and Europe, when he won the Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy) and the Tour de France in the same year. He was a generous sportsman, like they were in the old days, with a big heart – remember the episode, and the famous photograph, when Coppi and Bartali shared a water bottle - Coppi is still very much loved, as is shown by the many visitors to his House in Castellania, and by the sportsmen and women who visit the Mausoleum where he rests in peace next to his brother Serse.
