Museo Etnologico Missionario Salesiano (Castelnuovo Don Bosco)
Category: Tradition
In the green hills of the Asti province there is a place made world famous by: St Giovanni Bosco, founder of the Salesian Institution; St Giuseppe Cafasso; Beato (Beatified) Giuseppe Allamano; St Domenico Savio and the Cardinal Giovanni Cagliero. This is the Colle Don Bosco (Don Bosco Hill), where the Salesian Institute is found. This Institute, together with the small church of Our Lady the Helper of Christians, the Tempio Don Bosco (Don Bosco’s Temple), the Museo etnologico (ethnologic Museum) and the Salesian Missions, is a destination not to be missed for the believers that visit all year round from right across Italy. Missionary Ethnologic Museum houses a collection of objects and artefacts made by native people of South America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, as well as a considerable collection of specimens from the natural world, found in those countries by the Salesian missionaries. Objects of everyday use, made with great skill by women and children using various materials, are displayed in the Museum: small lacquer jewels decorated with bird feathers, and ornaments made with tree bark. Don Bosco (1815-1888), who was canonized by the Catholic Church as well as being the founder of the Salesian Order, is renowned for having been a great teacher and pedagogue, able to put into practice the dictates of his religion using teaching methods based on love and understanding more than on punishment and chastisement.
