Cripta di Sant'Anastasio (Asti)
Category: History and archaeology
The Chiesa di Sant´Anastasio (Saint Anastasio’s Church) was built around the VIII century, at the height of Lombard rule, and has undergone extension works and alterations over the centuries. So much so that even today evidence of later alterations, carried out up until the sixteen hundreds, can be seen overlapping with traces of the old Romanesque building. The Church, once part of a Benedictine complex, was a female monastery before being banned by the Napoleonic regime. The monastery, before the ban, had developed its own influence, not just at a spiritual level but particularly at an economic level, thanks to the estate at its disposal. The crypt of the church has three naves with cross vaults and is an important archaeological site. Here, capitals and columns from the Roman period and the early Middle Ages can be admired, above which can be seen additional, more recent layers. The Museum is closely connected to the Church, and houses coats of arms and sculptures that belonged to the most important families in the area between the VIII and the XVII century.
