Museo dell'Arazzeria Scassa (Asti)
Category: Thematic
The ancient monastery of Valmanera, just outside Asti, is home to a fascinating museum with an internationally renowned collection of tapestries, some of which were designed by artists such as Corrado Cagli, Mastroianni, Mirò, De Chirico and Kandinsky. But the museum does not only contain these unique exhibits: it is also a laboratory where the visitor can see how a tapestry is woven, cleaned or even restored. In particular, there are demonstrations of a technique known as “alto liccio” or high heald. This is the noblest form of tapestry weaving, not to mention the longest: it takes about 500 hours to weave one square metre of tapestry. And despite its thousand-year tradition, new and exciting patterns are constantly being invented.
