The visit to the shelter of Candelo, as if by magic takes tourists back to an authentic medieval hamlet. Walking in the long “rue” (streets) paved with river cobblestones, between the high walls and the vigilant towers, time seems to have stopped and visitors can lose themselves among hidden courtyards, frescoed walls and dark storerooms full of objects, which are evidence of how hard people worked long ago. In the Middle Ages the shelters were built to protect food supplies, as well as the farmers possessions in moments of extreme danger, when raids by armies or bandits were about to take place. Now the hamlet is considered unique in its field and is often used as a location by television and cinema studios. The Museum houses three sections; two are devoted to wine growing and producing and one to farming economy. A photographic library, explanatory panels, inside and outside the walls, exhibition areas and workshops have also been set up.
