Museo Borgogna (Vercelli)
Category: Modern and contemporary art
This collection was created by Francesco Antonio Borgogna, he was a leading figure of the enlightened middle-classes of Vercelli in the second half of the eighteen hundreds. This Museum houses fine Renaissance paintings, especially from Tuscany, Lombardy and Veneto: from Titian to Bernardino Luini, from Francia to Sodoma; as well as baroque masterpieces by Ludovico Carracci and Carlo Maratta. Of some value is also the collection of Flemish and Dutch paintings, with about 80 works. The paintings, bought between 1880 and 1906 at national and international auctions, mirror the taste of a collector who, in addition to ancient art, loved XIX century neoclassical and romantic art, (Ussi, Induno), genre painting (Patini, Chierici, Favretto) and Orientalism (Ussi, Monti). The decorative arts section is the most spectacular of the collection, here are kept some interesting examples of industrial art dating back to the end of the XIX century.
