Castles
Castello di San Giorgio Monferrato
Category: Castles
The castle, probably Monferrato's oldest, was built in a strategic position around the year 1000 to stop the Saracens from invading Piedmont. The object of repeated assaults, it became the property of the Gonzaga family in the 16th century and was then destroyed by the Spanish. The present day structure is due to the reconstruction ordered by Count Gozani, who in the 17th had a sumptuous Italian style garden created and extensive Baroque staircase built. The façade, in pure Neo-Gothic style, was created later by the architect Giuseppe Bollati Treccate.
