Castello di Monastero Bormida
Category: Castles
The founding of the town of Monastero dates back to 1050 when Aleramo, the Marquis of Monferrato, called a group of Benedictine monks to San Benigno Canavese from the Abbey of Fruttuaria to plant and cultivate the lands devastated by the Saracens. The original Romanesque bell tower from the abbey church, dating back to this same monastic presence, remains intact and was later outfitted as a belfry and connected to the castle by a bridge. The castle itself is the result of the transformation of the monastery. A quadrangular structure, it has huge lateral towers and, if the exterior has a medieval layout, the interior "especially the piano nobile" has valuable mosaic flooring and delicate frescoes.
