Parco di Villa Pallavicino (Stresa)
Category: Historical and botanical gardens
This park was created in 1855, but was later enlarged by the Duke of Villambrosa who planted out groups of trees at that time unknown in Italy, such as sequoias and lyriodendron tulypifera, also known as tulip tree. In 1862 the estate went to the marquises of Pallavicino, who enriched the park with greenhouses and numerous paths, as well as embellishing the building on the inside and on the outside with decorations, giving it the current imposing appearance. This park is very interesting from a naturalistic point of view; here can, in fact, be admired ancient oaks, chestnut trees, red beech-trees, plane-trees and magnolias, as well as 50 different species of animals including mammalians and birds. Walking through the paths full of flowers can be seen kangaroos, zebras, fallow deer and lamas that live in large spaces in partial freedom. A small lake is the home of aquatic birds, while enormous XIX century aviaries house toucans and parrots. The old stables have now become a restaurant and the charming chalet, that overlooks the Italian garden, as well as its splendid rose garden, are open to the public.
