Torino

This palace was built in 1731 by Filippo Juvarra in piazza Castello. It is one of the oldest examples of architecture designed specifically to house the Archives of a modern State. The proceedings of the central and local organs of the Savoy State up until the unification of the Kingdom of Italy are kept here, as well as the official proceedings of the state offices that had their seat in what is now the province of Torino, in the periods both preceding and following the unification. The oldest inventories kept here date back to the beginning of the XV century. The Savoy Archives were moved from Chambery to Torino after 1559, following a decision by Emanuele Filiberto to transfer the capital of the Duchy of Savoy to Torino. In 1731 the Archives were reorganised and were given a seat built especially for that purpose by the royal architect Filippo Juvarra, nearby Palazzo Reale (the Royal Palace). With the concession of the Statuto Albertino (Albert’s Statute), the Royal court archives became the general Archives of the Kingdom of Sardinia; then, with the unification of Italy, they became for a short period of time the central Archives of the Kingdom of Italy. In 1874 the Torino archives took on the role of regional Archives with the title Piedmont’s archive Office.
