A 5 metres base in reinforced concrete supports a volume of 183 metres by 100, and 7000 tons in weight, with a seating capacity of over 12.300. This is the new Palasport Olimpico (Olympic Indoor Stadium) of Torino commissioned to Arata Isozaki for the 2006 Torino Winter Olympic Games. Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, together with architect Pierpaolo Maggiora from Torino, from the beginning placed the post-Olympic use of the building at the centre of their project. PalaIsozaki was born: a multipurpose, versatile and flexible space, which can, thanks to the mobility of the stands, be transformed from ice rink to a space that can be used for concerts, shows or conventions. On the outside it has the appearance of a large stainless steel parallelepiped, suspended over a concrete and glass base. The panels that reflect the surrounding landscape create charming effects of light and give the building a dynamic appearance. The irregular and staggered arrangement of the external panels gives a vibrating effect, as if the enormous structure were moving.
