The fifth house west to the Royal square is Palazzo Chiablese (Chiablese Palace), which main entrance overlooks Piazza San Giovanni (St John’s Square), just a few steps from the Cathedral. This palace, which dates back to the sixteen hundreds, was modified and decorated by Benedetto Alfieri beween 1753 and 1767. Despite the bombings suffered during the Second World War, the interiors in rococo style are evidence of the precious and refined taste in decoration reached in Piemonte in the second half of the seventeen hundreds. During the Napoleonic era it was enriched by a third flat in a neoclassical style designed by Giuseppe Battista Piacenza, and it became the residence of governor Camillo Borghese. Palazzo Chiablese became in the early 1950s the home of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema (National Museum of Cinema)- which was later moved to the Mole Antonelliana - and it now houses the uffici della Direzione regionale per i Beni Culturali e Paesaggistici del Piemonte (regional Head Offices for the Cultural and Landscape Heritage of Piedmont).
