Palazzo Cisterna (Cisterna Palace), was designed by engineer Maurizio Valperga, and it was extended in 1691 when the part overlooking via Carlo Alberto was built. Today there is a garden here that was created by Henri Duparc, who also designed the project for the Parco della Venaria Reale (Park of Venaria Reale). It was between 1773 and 1787, however, that the palace became, under Valeriano Dellala’s supervision, a model of elegant classicism. The façade, marked by Corinthian pilasters, dates back to 1780. During those years, the best artists of the time worked on the decorations of the large inner rooms: painters Antoniani and Cignaroli, wood-carvers Gianotti and Bonzanigo, sculptors in marble Bernero and Ferrero, stucco decorator Bolina. In 1867 the building became the residence of the Dukes of Aosta, who promoted its completion with the rebuilding of the grand staircase and of the railing along the garden. Since 1940 Palazzo Cisterna has been the seat of the Provincia di Torino (Province of Turin).
